NATIONAL
MEDICAL UNIVERSITY
The National Medical University, a Leading
scientific and Treatment-and-prophylactic
centre of this country, marked its 150th
foundation anniversary in the year 1991. The
University releases yearly near 1,000
qualified specialists for the independent
Ukraine and for other countries of Europe,
Africa, Asia, Southern America.
The Medical
University is wide known owing to its famous
scientists, whose developments performed at
the level of world standards are used widely
in practical public health care. Among the
University's teaching staff,
there are 9 Members and Corresponding
Members of the Academy of Sciences. 28
Honored Scientists and Honored Workers of
higher school of the Ukraine, 45 laureates
of State Prizes, 137 Doctors, of Sciences,
113 Professors, 222 Docents, 554 Candidates
of Sciences. At present, above 6,000
students and near 300 postgraduates and
interns are studying at this higher
educational establishment.
Over
the years of its existence, the University
has trained some 60,000 physicians, among
them above 1,000 for foreign countries.

The Saint Vladimir Monument established on
the occasion of 150-anniversary of the
Medical University
The National Medical University was
established in 1841 as Medical Faculty of
the St. Vladimir University. Its first
professor and dean was a disciple of great
M. L. Pirogov, talented surgeon and
ophthalmologist V. 0. Karavayev.
Through the University's 150-year history,
there have been set up the well known
schools of morphologists , pathologists ,
therapists . General acceptance in the world
of medical science has been gained by the
works of anatomists M. S. Spirov, A. A.
Sushko, A. I. Sviridov on evolutional
morphology of the lymphatic system;
physiologists — on bioelectric phenomena,
the processes of an organism's fatigue and
recovery ; pathologists — on the
physiological system of connective tissue ;
surgeons — on operational interventions in
organs of the abdominal cavity ;
obstetricians/gynecologists — on the
prevention of maternal and infant mortality
; hygienists — on the environment protection
; epidemiologists — on mechanisms involved
in the transmission of pathologic infections
; dermatologists — on diagnosis and
treatment of chronic Dermatitis ;
neuropathologists — on viscero-refrectory
pathology of the nervous system ; dentists —
on prevention and treatment of canes and
maxillofa-cial deformities .
World-wide recognition has been gained by
such famous developments of the University's
coryphaei, as the creation of a science
about cerebral cytoarchitectonics and the
description of giant pyramidal cortical
cells (V. 0. Bets); the description of
coronary thrombosis and myocardial
infarction, made for the first time in the
world during patient's lifetime (V. P.
Obraztsov, M. D. Strazhesko); the
development of ionic theory for
bioelectrical phenomena in living tissues
(V. Yu. Chagovets), etc
